Technics Of Drawing In A Color Pencil.

Recently I have opened a color pencil for myself. I suggest to you also to get accustomed to this material more attentively.

Working with small children, I offered them cooler pencils for the first acquaintance with color. Then, very soon, passed to development of more serious materials – a watercolor and gouache. Also I was always confident that color pencils – is frivolous, insignificant and superficial technics…

Now, after my experiments with a color pencil, I should recognize that there are no insignificant materials and the technician in the fine arts in general!

So, what was found out at work with color pencils?

Specific features:

1. The color pencil does not maintain very big sizes of a format.

2. Possesses a color transparency.

3. Complexity and a color subtlety are reached by imposing of several colors.

4. Inherently, it nevertheless the drawing material and consequently, of course, it is necessary experience to draw by a regular pencil.

The elementary sketch.

The color pencil is erased with rubber very bad, therefore at first I do preliminary sketches on some simple paper and I bring editing, without being afraid to damage a surface. Primary drawing I make with a regular pencil, at first planning the basic forms, then defining borders of a light and shade. It allows not putting color on the places, which have been not intended for a covering.

If I accept result, I move the sketch on a paper for the main work. Remember that at this stage drawing does not require to be in details, the field of vision will be inevitably left by set of details: therefore postpone details to a work stage in color.

If you only start to master color pencils, choose a paper the most unpretentious and simple in use, and, except that, capable “to sustain loading” of corrections of errors. For example, the firm pencil is badly put down on a rough paper, and soft easily crumbles and breaks about a relief of a paper with well expressed texture. Therefore, it is better to use a qualitative paper with average texture indexes to practice and get acquainted with all nuances of technics of a color pencil. Naturally, it is necessary to experiment with a various paper.

My favorite kind of paper is “wipe paper”; its velvety surface will give to a pencil warm, gentle disposition. But as the paper relief can keep considerable volume of color, I can control the rich, saturated stains of color.

Irrespective of ability of a paper to “forgive” to the artist discrepancy and mistakes, it is not necessary to overload it with color. At an initial stage of studying do not put on a basis pigment dense layers. The problem consists in learning gradually, and strictly supervising, to build color.

In spite of the fact that a little updating is possible with the help of eraser, for example, for softening of separate places, the pencil pigment will be inevitably smeared on a paper if it has been put with a dense or deep layer. Draw easy lines to exclude necessity of correction of a dense layer of a pigment. Then you can improve work with new paint layers for a long time.
