A lot of baby boomers may like to forget that one of the watershed movements that defined the character of this generation was the period dominated by, for lack of a better word, hippies. That term that seems rather quaint and old-fashioned now had a awesome power in the mid to late sixties when it carried with it the influence of tremendous societal transformation as well as a massive change in public morality and perception. So as this is often a period of a bit of embarrassment for the baby boomer generation, it is also a formative part of their history and it deserves admiration for that reason.

For the record, not all baby boomers were hippies. As is often the case, the hippie movement was something that got massive news media coverage but it represented only a minor portion of the boomer populace at the time. By proportion, very few of that age group actually joined the “tune in, drop out, turn on” culture of the hippies. But as hippies were a quaint, eccentric, flashy and wicked crowd, they titillated the public interest any time there was a public spectacle brought on by hippie assembly.

However in spite of a small number, the hippie way of life did send waves of change into the society at the time. Part of that was because there was a universal discontent with the Vietnam War. So when the hippie movement became connected with the pacifist movement, they mixed to where there was practically no distinction.

The youth movement at the time put a mirror up to society and demanded we pay attention. Besides, for the first time ever, it held public figures liable for measures that were taken that injured the public good. This was revolutionary for sure and it has made the public more demanding and scrutinizing of the government ever since. And that is a good thing.

The counter society of the 1960′s literally put the ability for transformation back into the hands of the people. And that is in step with what the founding fathers wanted for America and something we can be thankful to the hippie movement for giving back to our society.

There are many other ways that the hippie or flower power movement have influenced our present society, but we tend to take it for granted and as the baby boomers have moved on there is no one to remind us, but if you are old enough and looking back you can see that today is really the baby boomers age.
