Dai Davies the anti hero of the book lives in a world as different to us as ours would be to him.

Dai travels to London from a small North Wales seaside resort, in an attempt to become famous. His brother Joe who is a brilliant guitarist is already there living in a squat. Dai has very little ability and can hardly play his bass guitar, but by chance manages to get into a rock band who are about to go on tour to Germany. Whilst Dai is away, everything changes in Britain as the old ‘hippie’ ideals are brushed aside with the brutal emergence of ‘punk.’ When Dai returns from Germany to quote from the book ‘my long hair, George Harrison moustache had now become as obsolete as the twin guitar solo.’ It is against this background of 70’s youth culture revolution that we track the lives of the book’s main characters. Hilariously funny and ironic, this is a book that you really will not be able to put down, and will read more than once.

The 22nd Macao Arts Festival opens with Marco Polo: The Imaginary Voyage (29/4, Macao Cultural Centre Grand Auditorium – MCCGA), a multi-disciplinary show from Pietragalla Compagnie combining both realistic and virtual elements with a mix of modern and classical music, hip hop, martial arts, songs and animated images. The performance will bring the audience to the futuristic adventures of famed explorer Marco Polo, who, guided by his muse, returns to the far away countries he visited in the past and re-discovers them once again.

Yet another family programme is The Lotus Lamp (21/5, Alegria Cinema), from the Macao Kaifong Children’s Opera Troupe.
