History Of The Word Show

The word show has an interesting etymological evolution, with at least one flip flop from passive to active. And in the end, its ancient meaning appears to bear a causative relationship to the modern word show.

The first use of show as implying an act of exhibiting dates from 1300. In a somewhat later form, in 1526, the word implies the creative of a deceptive appearance. The implication of a display, first appeared in 1561, and such expressions as “ostentatious display” appeared in 1713. The first recorded use of the word show as implying an entertainment program on radio or TV is seen in 1932. The term “show business” is noted as early as 1850. There is a definite sense in the modern development of the word that it can apply to the act of creating an appearance, such as a “show of hands,” as opposed to something more substantial, such as a Broadway show.

Before 1300 the word show existed only in the verbal form, and appears to have come from the word “to show.” But as one goes further and further back in antiquity, it is apparent that the word to show suggests more the act of looking or seeing than the act of exhibiting.

This connection is not difficult to understand in that a show causes people to look at something. And yet, this is a causative secondary connection and not primary.

In some cultures there are words which have a cognate relationship to the modern noun show, and which suggests the relationship between old word and new, in a different way. In Gothic, for example, the related word, “skaunjai,” means “beautiful.” and originally ” conspicuous.” And there is a related modern German word “shoene,” which means beautiful. The connection might be that something beautiful is worthy of being looked at.

The original proto Germanic root “skau,” means behold or look at. Again we can indirectly relate this ancient root word to the modern use of a show or display, which is not only something worthy of being looked at, but also something which others have the approval or command to look at. And the proto-IndoEuropean root of show, “skou” a word going back 5,000 or more years in antiquity, implied to pay attention, and perceive. Again, to relate this to the modern word, we might say that a show makes people pay attention and perceive.

So what do we learn from tracing the evolution of this word. Actually, we can learn quite a bit. We see from life that when someone wins approval to put on a show, whether it be on Broadway or a trade booth display at a convention center, he has gone through some type of approval process, which makes his “show” worthy of being looked at and considered. We call the play being performed or the booth being set up a show, and what we really mean, is just what the ancient word said, that this is something to be beholden to be looked at. Perhaps as everyone walks through a trade show, the word show is stirring ancient roots and telling him to “paying attention, and perceive,” what he is looking at.

Increase Your Online Dating Effectiveness

—- Stand out from the crowd:

Online dating can be very competitive, unless you look like a supermodel or movie star you’ll need to be creative to attract attention. Try to be original, even a bit quirky, and add a little humor to your profile. This will make you come across as being more upbeat and fun to around. If the site uses headliners, this can be a great tool to help you stand out. Headliners usually adds a bold header to your profile summary in the site’s search results. Avoid phrases like “Looking for love” and “Searching for my soul mate”, they are overused and unoriginal. Things like “Lonely Lady” or “Pick Me, Pick Me!” can make you sound desperate. Your goal is to try and come up with something unique and different. You want to differentiate yourself from all the others. Choose a headliner that tells others something about you, reflects your personality, what you are seeking, incorporates your hobbies or interests, and humor is always a good attention grabber.

Here’s a few examples of effective headliners:
“You’ll want this package delivered overnight!”, “I’m so tasty, it’ll make your tongue slap your brains out”, “I’m sure to have something you’re bound to like …”, “I offer excellent benefits …”.

Avoid using all CAPITALS. In the online world, using all capitals is considered “yelling” and rude behavior. Try using (…) to end your headline. That’s three dots. It gives the reader the perception that there is more to the story and they need to view your profile to find out more.

Feel free to occasionally switch it up. Come up with a few different headlines and change them every now and then to keep things fresh.

—- Use site features to your advantage:

Many dating sites have blogs or forums, don’t ignore these powerful tools . Writing about topics and commenting on other member’s topics expands on your profile and can drastically increase the odds}likelihood of you being noticed on the site, and is a great way to make new friends and for people to get to know you better.

—- Take action!

Don’t be reluctant to make the first move, send some messages to other members.

Yes ladies, this means you as well, there’s a lot of rivalry out there these days, don’t let all the potential good ones get away. Maybe some of the men you find interesting or appealing are a little shy or are simply passing over your profile because they sense maybe they don’t measure up to what you’re seeking and would be elated to hear from you.

You can’t just create a profile with a couple photos then expect to sit back and wait for responses to come rolling in. To be successful at meeting people or finding love you have to mingle a bit and make others aware you are alive and interested. This probably the number one reason why some people aren’t successful at online dating.

—- Choosing the right dating site:

You can also drastically increase your likelihood of meeting people you already have something in common with by choosing niche sites that are geared towards such things as hobbies and lifestyle.

For example, if you’re seeking Equestrian Singles consider a site such as TheHitchingPost.net, the Hitching Post is an online community exclusively for American and Canadian cowboys, cowgirls, horse enthusiasts, farmers, ranchers, equestrian singles, and those into the country lifestyle!

Items That Require Crating For A Move

Crating is one of the more challenging aspects of professional packing, but when properly done, it enables the mover to insure that even easily breakable goods, including marble, fine art and antiques will be protected from the rigors of the move process, and can, at the same time, be shipped along with the other household items.

Items that are frequently crated during a move or while being shipped include machinery equipment, electronics, trade show displays, furniture, pianos, motorcycles, plasma TVs and any other large and or fragile item. Once crated, an item is essentially protected from the dangers of the move environment.

Moving crates are not limited to preformed standard sizes. Some moving and crating companies can also manufacture crates and specially custom design them for a particular item. Crates come in many different materials. Crates can be made of wood, or plywood, or Oriented Standard Board, or other materials including, corrugated triple wall. Corrugated triple wall has the advantage of cost. It is advertised as being as hard as plywood, at the cost of corrugated material.

Special items that are frequently crated include valuable art works such as marble, fine art and antiques. It is important when arranging for custom crating, that the company that will loading and or transporting the item knows its exact dimension ahead of time. This is one reason why it is dangerous to plan moves involving a moving cost estimate from an online moving broker.

Online broker representatives, eager to get clients will frequently encourage a homeowner to make the cost estimate over the phone. The sales rep will read through a preprinted inventory list noting the quantity of each item to be moved, e.g. how many beds? how many tables? etc. The list includes specialty items, but frequently a valuable household object cannot be categorized in any of the specialty item categories. As a result, the moving company will not get an accurate description of the piece, and will not have a crate specially prepared to transport it.

One homeowner wanted to move his large stuffed goose. The telephone rep went down the list and found no category that accurately described the stuffed goose, so he put down specialty item-statue. Unfortunately, specialty item-statue took up only 8 cubit feet, and the goose took up 200 cubic feet. When the company came on moving day, they had no crate prepared for the goose. They had to subsequently take everything to storage and come back for the . The stuffed item.Additional charges for that one item was 600.00 . Other times, sadly, moving companies will take the item without proper packing material, and the result can be the tragic loss of a precious art object.

Recoveri Launches Microdot Tracking Products

South Africa-based Recoveri has launched an entirely locally-developed, superior microdot-tag and trace solution for vehicles and other high-value moveable assets, giving South Africans access to affordable, effective asset-identification technology that has the potential to curb the market for stolen goods by making theft and the resale of stolen property less viable for criminals.

Recoveri is one of only three providers of microdot tags for asset-identification in this country and aims to capture about 50 percent of the growing market in the short-term, with the goal of growing its market-share to 70 percent by 2012.

The company’s director, Philip Opperman, believes that there is a huge market for microdot technology in South Africa because it has significant potential to deter theft by limiting the local market for stolen goods.
“Securing the identity of assets is essentially the most effective tool to limit theft because it reduces their marketability, and microdot technology is one of the best ways of entrenching the identity of an asset because it provides indisputable proof of ownership and a level of asset-identification that simply makes the resale of stolen property less viable and less lucrative for criminals and syndicates.
“Local and international statistics show that the use of microdot technology to entrench the identity of vehicles leads to 50 to 60 percent decrease in the number of stolen and hijacked vehicles. That’s pretty impressive,” says Opperman.

According to him, microdot technology, as a tool to reduce the marketability of stolen goods and deter theft, has gained widespread acceptance in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Russia.

In South Africa, the use of microdot technology is gaining momentum and as awareness grows, microdots (special polymer-based devices which can carry a unique identification number) are expected to become one of the most credible and affordable means of securing the identity of assets and deterring theft.

Recoveri, which is 100 percent owned and managed by South Africans, has spent over two years researching the market and refining its solution for local consumers and businesses.

Recoveri uses advanced nanotechnology to validate its locally-manufactured Recoveri Dots, making it impossible to copy or counterfeit their tags. Each batch is etched with a unique Asset Identification Number (AIN) and then mixed into Recoveri’s patented, resilient adhesive, ready for application across the areas of an asset.

The solution, which dries to a hard, transparent finish, contains an Ultraviolet (UV) sensitive material which glows when exposed to a UV light to indicate the presence of the microtags.

Although virtually undetectable to the naked eye, tiny Recoveri Dot’s etched with the unique AIN and spread inconspicuously across vehicles, office equipment, computers, furniture, jewellery and appliances, become powerful asset identifiers.

The AIN is linked to a full description of all the assets related to it on Recoveri’s high-security web-based Asset Register.

The Recoveri Asset Register offers level 4 security, which is the same level of security provided by banking websites. All information is stored off site, with full redundancy and real time backups.

Only authorised users authenticated by means of username and password have access to the database. The Recoveri Asset Register is easily accessible via the Web and can cope with unlimited data storage.
Customers can register their assets and manage their own asset register themselves online, or contact the call centre to do it for them.

Teams within the SAPS have been equipped with devices that enable them to check for microtags on vehicles and other high-value assets seized from criminals. Recoveri Dot’s telltale signature and the unique AIN allow them to trace ownership via the Recoveri Register, increasing the chances of recovering lost and stolen assets.

Recoveri also has a whistle blowing aspect to it and people will be able to report suspected stolen property and assets anonymously via the Recoveri website. This information will be acted on by Recoveri’s private investigators, law enforcement agencies and insurers.

Opperman points out that success of microdot tagging as a tool to deter and reduce theft depends on the wider adoption and acceptance of the technology by the SAPS, local consumers and businesses, and other relevant authorities.

Recoveri has been in consultation with these bodies and is working with them to drive further acceptance at all levels. There is also a growing interest in microdot technology from other industries including the insurance industry and financial services sector. Negotiations are currently underway with leading insurers to offer Recoveri’s solution as a value-added product.

“After nearly three years of intense research, planning and development, we are delighted to deliver our advanced tagging and trace solution to the market. We believe that our solution, which is both flexible in its application and affordable, will be welcomed by South Africans who want to protect what’s theirs and be proactive about fighting crime in this country,” concludes Love.

Recoveri is the only player that operates in the Microdot and Tracking arena. In effect, you are able to track our microdots in the event of an asset being stolen or hijacked.

The Most Vulnerable Part Of A Move

The most vulnerable part of every move is the loading and unloading, when your goods are in motion. One false move, when the movers are loading a large appliance, or valuable piece of furniture, can result in the loss of thousands of dollars in a manor of seconds. Not only are your large items vulnerable. Your special items and your fragile items are particularly endangered when movers are placing them into the truck, in proximity to heavy boxes, which could crush the fragile items in a second.

Goods must be packed tightly on a moving truck, and secured so they won’t jiggle around during the ride, and potentially incur damage. For these reasons you must be sure that the team that loads your household belongings are skilled professionals.

Many people mistakenly believe that loading for a move is a mechanical process that involves drudgery but little skill. However this belief is a dangerous misconception The art of loading, is complex, and involves many different strategies depending on the type of furniture or article being loaded. Boxes must be differentiated into heavy and light, fragile and non-fragile. And special unusual items frequently require special strategies.

Certain situations call for more care than others. Moving by shipping container can be very beneficial, because the goods are constantly under lock and key. On the other hand, pods and shipping containers are subjected to more tilting and vibration than trucks, during transport. Special care must be taken to load the containers effectively, so items won’t slip around It is important, therefore, that items inside shipping containers are securely tied to the sides of the moving container.

Proper loading involves proper equipment. Professional moves come prepared with hand trucks, light and heavy duty furniture dollies. furniture blankets, and cargo net and moving ropes to secure items to the sides of the truck. Preparing for the load requires screw driver and wrenches to assist in the dissembly and subsequent assembly of furniture and other large household goods. A qualified moving team must include at least one person experienced in dissembly and assembly.

Finally all the equipment and all the knowledge must be put together with the right moves. Members of a qualified professional moving team must be physically fit, experienced and certified. Movers can’t afford to drop items, when in motion. And the move team must have all the smarts when it comes to loading items and pulling the dolly up the ramp, (man on the downside to insure against slippage). The order of loading items onto a truck must become second nature. (Heavy items first near the cab and balanced, long items along the side. heavy boxes, carpets in the center, lighter boxes on top of them and fragile items in last.) Procedures for use of furniture blankets and mattress coverings, and all other items designed to protect the cleanliness and safety of goods must be second nature. When a moving team has all these qualities, then and only then can you feel confident to trust them with your precious household goods.

The Modern And Ancient History Of The Word Video

The word video is of fairly recent origins, as are videos. A prominent online etymology site first notes that the word video first appeared in 1935. At that time it was coined as meaning the visual equivalent of audio. The more contemporary use of the word, as in referring to a videotape, dates from 1953. Subsequently,in 1959, the word “videotape” was used as a verb. Videocasette appeared in 1971, video game in 1973 and videocassette recorder in 1971.

We find the word “video” in ancient times as originating from the late Latin term “video,” the first person singular of “videre to see. However, amazingly we can trace the Latin root to much older term that is a word in the Proto-Indi-European language. The Latin word videre, a Late Latin word, not only means to see but also to look at and consider and it derives from the Proto-Indi_European root word “weid.” Although we don’t see people walking around speaking the word “weid,” in the modern world, it’s meaning is known through the many modern words which derive from “weid.”

Before considering all the words that derive from “wied,” in many different languages, it is perhaps worth noting that philosophically, there are at least two major types of vision. There is external vision, and there is internal vision, or imagination. As will be seen when examining the derivations of weid, different cultures employ the derivations of the word in different ways.

It is interesting to note right off that this ancient word, from which derived the Latin word for “to see,” give rise to many words, in many cultures which means knowing, wisdom and or certainty. These derivations include the word “wise,” wisdom,” witan, ” and wite,” in English. There is a modern expression that “seeing believing.” But in the more internal sense, some people associate seeinga with knowing and with certainty. And the root word “weid,” has given rise to many words meaning certainty. The Middle English word “ywis,” or “iwis” means certainty. And also, the Sanskrit word “vedah,” which derives from weid, means certainty. On the other hand, at the other pole, the word guise, in French, which also derives from “weid” means a semblance or reality. In between these two poles, the Greek word “eidos,” means that which is seen or perceived, and in that sense the certain reality. Perhaps the furthest flung derivation of the word is said to be the Greek word Hades, which refers to the unseen world.

One might speculate that the various derivations of the word reflect the outlook of the individual cultures. In India, a very mystical country, this word which can connote seeing, transforms to knowing, a type of seeing of the mind. In France, on the other hand, a romantic and very cynical country, the word gives rise to a word implying the semblance of the physical appearance of something. And in Greece, the ancient home of deep negative philosophical thoughts, the word comes to mean the opposite of seeing, or that which is not seen.

Crime Prevention Strategies Defined

The basic principle of crime prevention is made up of two aspects namely visual policing and strategic raids. The former is your traditional “Bobby on the beat” and law enforcement vehicles patrol the communities that they service. While these have their proactive prevention advantages the latter is still the most necessary.
Strategic police raids are designed around known crime areas and have the objective of cleaning out crime nests and at the same time search and seizure relating to current open criminal cases. Criminals have a tendency to hang out together in unsavoury environments like unlicensed liquor houses, brothels, gambling joints, unoccupied buildings and in most cases there is narcotic involvement. Flash raids allow the law enforcement agencies to detain suspected felons for a short period of time which enables them to check against fingerprints, photographs and in some cases DNA.
In some cases the law enforcement agents will come across “suspected stolen property” and they have the right to seize such items until ownership is verified. A typical case would be a drug addict living in squalor who is in pocession of an expensive notebook computer. In these cases it is difficult for the law enforcement agent to identify the original owner let alone link the asset to the original crime which may have been armed robbery, home invasion and even murder.
This is where the Recoveri Dot steps in and benefits the law enforcement agencies worldwide. Assets marked with Recoveri dot are registered into an international database. On a crime prevention raid, the law enforcement agents would check if any assets are stolen. How would they do this? Firstly the adhesive that is used in Recoveri dot has a UV (Ultra Violet) component. When exposed to a UV light the assets will glow alerting the agent to the fact that the asset is marked with Recoveri Dot. The unique AIN (Asset Identification Number) is then read off the microdot and queried in the Recoveri database. This is done using a simple 40X hand held microscope. If the asset was stolen it would reflect this as well as the police case number. This would allow the law enforcement agent to immediately arrest the suspect and charge him for possession of suspected stolen property. At this stage the original crime would have been determined and an investigation started. A typical example would be a person was violently murdered and their mobile phone stolen. This mobile phone was marked with Recoveri Dot. The mobile phone is then sold on the black market. The mobile phone that was picked up in the crime prevention raid would initiate an investigative trail back to the original perpetrator.

About Microdot Technology
Microdot technology has been used by the military for espionage purposes, and by anti-fraud and corruption authorities to mark gambling chips, for decades.
As an asset-marking and identification tool to reduce the marketability of stolen goods and deter theft, microdot technology has gained widespread acceptance in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Russia.
In South Africa, the use of microdot technology is gaining momentum and as awareness grows, microdots (special polymer-based devices which can carry a unique identification number) are expected to become one of the most effective and affordable means of securing the identity of assets and deterring theft.
