While the detrimental effects of stress are well-recognized, it’s surprising that many people don’t recognize they are experiencing negative emotions, which, in turn, increase their stress.

Beth’s Story:

Because she worked in a technical area , Beth, one of my Emotional Intelligence workshop participants, couldn’t imagine that EI could be important to people’s performance. The idea seemed far-fetched. In addition to her profession’s[s/pin] extremely analytical nature, the organizational culture supported the concept that emotions played no role in her profession. Beth also carried this impression over into her personal life. During our goal-setting interview at the start of the program, Beth indicated that she was not aware of her emotions and they couldn’t possibly be of any significance to her work. Beth also shared that her colleagues were difficult to work with. Because she was detached from her feelings, Beth did not understand the emotional impact she had on others. In addition, Beth’s boss sensed that she was the cause of all her problems. He perceived that Beth’s difficulties were a result of her insensitivity to others, lack of emotional self-awareness and distant behavior.

As a result of the program, Beth began to use the simple, proven EI techniques taught to increase her emotional self awareness. Beth and I met for her first coaching session. With tears in her eyes, Beth shared that she now understood that she did have emotions and those emotions that were negative were negatively affecting her relationships both at home and at work. Beth recognized that when she distanced herself, her colleages viewed her as unapproachable. Beth shared her insight with her boss, in confidence. Before this conversation Beth’s boss was not aware that she had no idea about her behavior and its impact on her co-workers. With this new insight, Beth’s boss was more willing to supporting and listening to her.

Beth’s experience is not uncommon. Many of us go about our daily lives unaware of our feelings and how our feelings might be impacting our relationships. As a culture, we are predisposed to disregarding emotions. We tend to be more focused on getting the work done. We don’t seem to recognize that discounting emotions can be detrimental to effectiveness and productivity.

Without the awareness of the critical importance of emotions, we lack insight into how our negative responses to situations, events and people are affecting us and those around us. Our negative emotions can spark upwards of 1400 biochemical events, some of which result in physiological changes such as increased adrenaline, heart rate, blood pressure and cortisol (the stress hormone). These events negatively affect our physical energy, mental clarity and personal effectiveness. Experiencing these negative emotions can cause us to be highly reactive, displaying behaviors such as anger and defensiveness which may cause others to avoid us. And when others view us as unapproachable, we can loose their valuable help, insights and suggestions.

Where Do You Start?

Start by recognizing when you are experiencing negative feelings. List those times and the situations both at work and at home when you notice those negative emotions. For example, you may feel depressed knowing you’ll have to work late every night this week. Or you may feel frustrated that a deadline is shortened. Or you might experience anxiety when your boss approaches you about a particular project. Identifying and listing these situations helps you realize those things that trigger negative emotions.

Next, develop an emotional vocabulary by naming the emotions the identified triggers evoke. Expand your vocabulary to include positive emotions you experience during fun times. By recognizing and naming your emotions, you will start to become more emotionally self-aware. Over time, notice where you are expending most of your emotional energy. When you find yourself feeling negative emotions, use some simple, emotional management techniques, to transform those emotions into positive, productive energy.

Being in the military is a very important part of a person’s life. Are you prepared? Here are two simple steps a couple of helpful tips that will make you more prepared in the case of two different types of emergencies. Emergency #1 – Stolen Wallet
Take a few minutes and make a photocopy of everything in your wallet including the front and back of your credit cards and membership cards. Place the copied pages in a manila envelope and mark the envelope “Contents of Wallet” and date it. Place the envelope in your safe deposit box. Mark your calendar for 3 to 6 months from now to update your “Contents of Wallet” envelope. Now, if your wallet is lost or stolen you will now know exactly what you lost and whom you need to contact.

Emergency #2 – Flood, Fire or Break In
The best way to prepare for one of these emergencies is to have a safe that is both water and fireproof. You could opt to keep your items in a safe deposit box at the bank, it’s just a bit less accessible than one that is in your home. There are a few conventional options. One is to go out to the local country and western bars and try to meet other singles. This has been a common way of meeting the opposite sex for ages and has worked for many people and something most of us have done at one time or another. If you’re newly divorced and middle aged your first instinct is often to return to your roots where you used to meet lots of single people, maybe even the person you married. So you wait for the weekend to come around and get all dressed up and head out to discover things don’t quite seem the same as you remember, you find plenty of single people there but they are much younger than you are, and those in your age group are often there with someone else just for night out of dancing and/or drinking, making the pickings pretty slim. #1 – Keep all of your passwords and log-ins organized and easily accessible. One way to do this is to keep them in your address book. How this works is you simply make a new “contact” for each of your accounts. In the notes section write in the URL, password and log-in and any other notes pertaining to that account. Set up a code to keep them secure in the event that someone gets their hands on your address book. For example, your code system could be that you make the first and last digits or letters bogus. Schedule time each week to go through your “To Read” folder so it doesn’t get out of control.

#3 – Try an experiment of scheduling your To-Do List into your daily calendar. For example, if one of your To-Do List items is “find a tree-trimming service”, than put it into your calendar as an appointment – “Thursday, 10:00am-10:15am, find tree trimming service”. Many things on your list will take less than 15 minutes, but schedule each such item for 15 minutes anyway. You will have about 12 “to do” items scheduled in a 3-hour time period, you will probably accomplish everything on the list early and will have had time to handle interruptions.

Tip #1 – In any small space your best asset is usually the walls. Adjustable vertical shelving units can do miracles for creating space and keeping your floor clean and clear.

Tip #2 – Create defined areas, for example, a study space, a sleeping space, a sitting area, and an eating space. Make the most of each space. First make it functional then make it appealing.

Get creative, for example maybe a desktop can double as a study space and eating area. Put a chair or stool on both sides of it (so two people can sit and eat together). On one side have a pull out basket unit (that sits under the desktop) store all of your study supplies (pens, pencils, stapler, tape, ruler, calculator, etc.) and on the other side have a pull out basket unit that stores kitchen supplies (silverware, can opener, cloth napkins, etc.). Mount a shelving unit on the wall above the desktop and stack dishes and cookware on one shelf and put your binders and reference materials on another shelf.

Tip #3 – Create a space you love. Add some fun or soothing color. A little paint can go a long way. Painting all of the walls, furniture and even the ceiling can make a huge difference in a small space. If you can’t paint, use fabric and rugs. You can temporarily cover the fronts of armoires and dresser drawers with fabric as well as make cool window treatments and wall hangings. If you love your space you will be more likely to keep it clean and organized.

The Golden Rule: Create a place for everything so that everything can be in its place. For small spaces to be functional they need to stay clean and organized. If you have designated place for everything, it will be easy to keep your space picked up.

Tip #5 -Look for straight, not kink, bracelet

For rolex, the bracelet is a finely craft piece of jewelery. There is no room for uneven placement of the metal pieces that formed the bracelet. Use this fact to help you examine whether the used rolex is real or fake. Take the watch and hold it over a soft surface with the watch facing down. Then, look at the links in the bracelet. Make sure they are hanging nice and smooth. The bracelet is what holds the watch to your wrist and it accounts for a lot of the value of the whole watch.

Tip #6 – Real rolex has no clear back cover

Many of the fake rolex watches have a clear window on the back that allows you to see the mechanism. Although this may look awesome, it is a big give away that the used rolex is a fake. This is because rolex has yet to make a watch with a clear back cover. Hence, once you can see the inside of the watch from the back, be assured that it is not the real thing.

Tip #7 – Look out solid winding stem, rather than glued on crown

This is a more difficult tip as you need to look carefully at the winding stem of the watch. Pay attention to the part used to set the date and wind the watch on non-automatic models. A real rolex should have its crown trademark molded into the end of the stem. If you can’t locate the crown, forget the deal as it is very likely a fake. However, even if it does have the crown, you must take a good look at another important aspect: the stem from the side. The real rolex will mold the crown together with the winding stem as one piece while a fake rolex only has the crown glued onto the end of the winding stem.

Tip #8 – A real rolex has triplock seals

Most of the rolex models, like the Submariner, Sea-Dweller and Daytona, use an extra seal within the threads of the winding crown’s tube. To see this extra seal, you need to fully unscrew the winding crown. The gasket looks like a small o-ring. Most of the fake rolex do not have this extra seal. Even for those fake rolex that do, the seal is not functioning. A real rolex has been finely instrumented so if you got a rolex of which the winding stem doesn’t unscrew to set the time, or is loose after doing so, you know you’ve got a fake in your hands.

Tip #9 – Look out for moving holograms on real rolex

Every rolex from the factory comes with a Hologram-encoded sticker on the back of the watch. This hologram can be identified by the trademark crown sitting above the watch’s reference number. The important thing is that these holograms can give you different images from different angles. This is the litmus test that most fake rolex will fail as they usually have hologram stickers that don’t change appearance.
